Zanzibar has two rainy seasons. The longer one runs from March to May; the shorter from October to November. This doesn’t mean constant rain—showers often last only a few hours, leaving plenty of time to enjoy the sun and the beach.
The official currency is the Tanzanian shilling (TZS), but US dollars are widely accepted.
If you plan to exchange currency on the island, bring USD 50 and 100 bills—issued after 2010. You’ll get the best rates in Stone Town, where you’ll also find ATMs.
Cards are accepted at hotels, many restaurants, and some tourist shops, but a small fee may apply. It’s handy to carry small denominations for tips—they can go a long way in getting things done.
The Zanzibella Hotel & SPA team is happy to assist with anything related to your stay, including payment matters.
Travellers arriving from other African countries are required to be vaccinated against yellow fever. Visitors from elsewhere have no mandatory vaccinations, but it’s recommended to consider tetanus, typhoid, diphtheria, and hepatitis (A/B). Before travelling, consult your country’s public health authority or a Travel Medicine Centre, and check your insurer’s vaccination recommendations.
Zanzibar has a functioning healthcare system. If needed, our staff will help you contact a first-aid doctor—there’s a clinic in the same town as our hotel. European medicines are available, and Stone Town has a well-equipped specialist hospital.
Zanzibar offers holiday-friendly weather almost year-round. Daytime temperatures are usually above 25 °C, nights rarely drop below 20 °C, and the Indian Ocean stays a pleasant 23–27 °C. While there are rainy seasons, showers often last only a few hours.
The best time to visit is June–September for ideal weather. If you want to escape winter, December is also great—around 28 °C. Showers may occur, but are usually brief and refreshing.
Zanzibar is considered safe for travellers. As everywhere, follow basic precautions—avoid walking alone at night and keep an eye on your belongings. Don’t forget sun protection and regular hydration.
There is some tropical-disease risk (e.g., malaria), though cases on Zanzibar are currently very rare and local authorities actively reduce mosquito habitats. For extra safety, use repellents, wear light-coloured clothing (avoid very bright colours), and skip sweet, floral perfumes.
